Feels odd to "like" what you write, with a heart. But I completely agree. I was musing about humanity's weapon development (can't find a better word); from swords and sabers, bows and arrows, to AR-15s and hydrogen bombs. What does this say about us. Then again, people were always cruel...
Yeah, the proliferation of weapons -- up to and including nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons -- is ALMOST enough to make a person lose heart. I say ALMOST because parallel to that is the proliferation of every-more subtle, beautiful and substantial evolutions of human rights and a politics of fairness and love. Personally, I think we're going to make it, but I also think we are besieged with so many problems on so many fronts, that it will take activism from many, many people, working not on every problem but the ones that are closest to their hearts, to tip the balance from violent control to healing love. Thanks for supporting us and for writing this, our very first chat post! I'm jazzed.
I spent 20+ years in the mid 80s and 90s working as a CRNA in an inner city trauma center. Every day it was gunshot wounds to the chest, etc. It was non-stop with really awful wounds. We lost a lot of patients and saved some. Despite reading descriptions as above I can’t even begin to imagine what the wounds look like today with military weapons. I’m definitely glad I’m retired.
I am not a medical person, and I don't know how you guys handle it. I don't. My mother was an Army surgical nurse, and she had nerves of STEEL. I watched her save my father's life when he went blue and fell to the floor at age 32. Then I watched her save a man's life by the side of the road when there was an auto accident. And that was NOTHING, NOTHING compared to what's happening now. And how are the jackasses in Texas handling this. THEY ARE TRAINING 6 YEARS OLDS -- FIRST GRADERS -- TO USE THE BLEED KITS THEY HAVE PUT IN EVERY GRAMMAR SCHOOL HALLWAY INSTEAD OF BANNING ASSAULT WEAPONS. MEN'S ADOLESCENTS GI JOE EGOS ARE WORTH MORE.
Yeah I can’t even imagine what they are thinking. They’re clueless and heartless to put the kids in that position. Even as adults it’s a mindblower to care for trauma victims but that’s what you train to do so you do it and you deal with it emotionally when you go home. Expecting kids to use bleed kits is just beyond the pale. We need to ban these types of weapons. Period.
I personally can barely write anything about this mass psychopathic issue some Americans have concerning power. Guns take all our freedoms away. No one can tell a sane, thinking human anything other than that. If you need a gun then I am not safe around you!
There are answers. Open “gun” alleys. Like bowling alleys. You can check yourself in , be assigned a gun relating to your psychic needs( murder, control, power, manhood/womanhood) and have a license and a record of how many bullets will be needed to quench your hostility. Then shoot away in an enclosed , gun friendly outlet. This owned by the those who are only interested in supporting your hostility.
However, gun manufacturers, will pay a very very high tax . Terrorism is not freedom. Your sad need to over power me with your lack of manhood/ womanhood, takes my freedom away.
HOW, just HOW???? and WHY??? is EVERYONE not OUTRAGED that these weapons are on the streets and being used against our children???
What have we become?
Are we so frightened of possibilities that we ignore realities at the sacrifice of our most innocent???
At the sacrifice of ANYONE!
Just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? For having differences?
My God in heaven, how we must break Your heart over and over again for the way we treat one another. Whether we believe in a deity or not, certainty we can all find a way to agree on humanness and being humane. Can’t we?
I do not see a place for these weapons in civilian life in any scenario. We need to do better for our children, and one another.
You have asked the question I keep asking with the same sense of profound outrage you express. The people who love their guns and want more and more powerful weapons are, I think, a minority, but they are rolling in cash and so buy elections so people vote their way. And slowly, guns have become more and more lethal, but nothing has been done. So now we have three guns for every person in America. Only 32% of people own guns, and 44% live in a household with a gun somewhere on the property, even if it's out behind the shed. Here's the breakdown:
As is typical, the rate of personal gun ownership varies most by political party and ideology, gender, race/ethnicity, region and urbanicity, with smaller differences seen by household income and marital status.
Republicans (50%), rural residents (48%), men (45%), self-identified conservatives (45%) and Southerners (40%) are the most likely subgroups to say they personally own a gun.
Liberals (15%), Democrats (18%), non-White Americans (18%), women (19%) and Eastern residents (21%) are the least likely to report personal gun ownership.
So, you can see this breaks heavily Republican, rural, male, conservative, and white.
So those are the people, a minority, who hold this reality in place while the majority have to grievel. One of my friends, who has an 8-year-old grammar school kid took her to school and she didn't want to go. She assured her child that she was safe. The kid got out and she drove away. When she got halfway home, she realized that she'd just lied to a child who could have her arm blown off or her head explode because some )(*^&^ thought it would be fun to shoot up some kids. She went back and got her, took her home, and started home schooling her. She said the moment she couldn't protect her child was the most chilling and devastating of her life.
I'm with you Bahamabean. And also, one of my best friends is a retired Marine long-gun sniper, and he says these guns do NOT belong in the hands of any civilian -- and that they also don't belong in the hands of police. These are weapons of war. Of WAR. ONLY.

Devastating reading. Completely nauseating to contemplate.
I worked in Trauma/ Orthopedics, Vascular exc, in the OR.
My entire career in Nrsg. A bullet if any kind tears thru what ever it hits.
I wish I could detail my yrs, I have seen upclose too close. I am pretty sure not even my own grown children have any idea of the devastation.
My own State rep I’ve written has multiple ads and she’s always holding a gun. She has never once represented what I see and what I’ know.
We do not need AR15’s at all. At all. Go play a video game .
Please write your rep and let them know you will vote for the person who has sound judgment when it comes to guns.
Thanks for listening

I ask one thing: think it through….. America.

Heartbreaking statistics and enraging inaction.
