When I was doing my Psych Residency many years ago (early 1980's), I told one of my supervisors about a patient who had been sexually abused. The professor had a PhD in SoWo and was a truly compassionate man. I asked how common this was. He said that statistics said around one in a million. I said, "Then how come I have FOUR of them?!" That's how incredibly ignorant even professionals were at the time.
Thanks so much for reminding everyone of this. If I'm correct, 1/4 girls and 1/8 boys are sexually molested. I'm so glad that you survived what was done to you. (Ah! We are both psychiatrists. No coincidence, that. My issue was a mentally ill, untreated, mother.)
