Three Trump Principals Indicted in Michigan for Fake Electors Scheme

Mike Roman, James Troupis and Kenneth Chesebro (again) face criminal felony charges.

BREAKING. As writes NBCNews:

Three men involved in the so-called fake electors scheme to keep former President Donald Trump in office following his 2020 election loss have been charged in Wisconsin, according to court records.

Mike Roman, a Philadelphia native who served as the Trump campaign's head of Election Day operations, was charged Tuesday, as was Kenneth Chesebro, an attorney who struck a plea deal with prosecutors in a separate 2020 election case in Georgia in October. James Troupis, a former judge and Trump campaign attorney, was also charged in connection with the fake electors scheme.

Chesebro, Roman and Troupis are all charged with felony forgery, according to court records. They are charged for their role in getting a slate of pro-Trump electors to sign paperwork attesting, falsely, that Trump had won Wisconsin in the 2020 election. Similar slates of fake electors for Trump were organized in several states and charges have been brought in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Georgia.

Note that Kenneth Chesebro detached his case from Trump’s in Georgia, strucked a plea deal, and turned state’s evidence. Evidence he gave Georgia may be available to the attorneys-general in Arizona, Nevada, and Michigan.

It didn’t end with the election. According to American Oversight:

In March 2021, American Oversight obtained copies of the forged electoral vote certificates signed and submitted to the National Archives and Congress by supporters of former President Trump seeking to undo his election loss. The false certificates were part of a scheme in which Trump allies, pointing to lies about widespread voter fraud, sought to present the signatories as “alternate” slates of electors and thus prevent the Jan. 6, 2021, congressional certification of President Biden’s victory.

Of the 84 individuals who signed their names to the seven certificates, 14 who served as leaders of the effort in their respective states were subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. 

While the plot to overturn the 2020 election failed, the lies upon which it was based have been kept alive by election-denying activists across the country who have worked to cast doubt not just on the 2020 results but on the integrity of U.S. election processes. Several of the fake electors have been active in those efforts, including by playing key roles in partisan sham election investigations. Below is a summary of records obtained by American Oversight that reveal the involvement of several fake electors in efforts to undermine faith in democracy.

Every time we have one of these indictments come down, we have more evidence about what Trump himself did and about the culpability for which he will ultimately pay—unless he wins and pardons himself for everything. And the men indicted in Michigan may hope against hope he will pardon him like he pardoned Rogert Stone and Paul Manaford. Or they may, like Chesebro, have the sense to know that Trump cares for no one but himself and behave according.
