Hi ... I just deleted a post by "Open Letters by Mersault" because it had a link in it. I always delete them for the ONE reason that I don't have the time to open and read them all, and I don't want to accidentally lead anybody astray. That doesn't mean it wasn't a good link or anything, just that I don't have the time to make sure it's OK. I ain't angry or nuthin'. [s]
I remember talk to this effect at the time, though nothing confirmed of course. We should remember that Reagan was negotiating with Argentina for a US Naval Base in the Falklands before the War in 1982. Left the Argentinians believing that they were free to invade the islands. Until the American public made it quite clear they supported the Islanders and the British!!!!
I have always thought this was true. President Carter was never given his due when he was in office, carried on serving the American people with the same dedication he always had. It was a slap in the face when those hostages were released on Reagan’s watch and it forever solidified my lack of respect for Reagan and most of the Republican Party.
I have known about that for a long time. Important for the truth to be confirmed and spread… This was not the first time the R’s were traitors to the US and our citizens to win an election—- They did it in ‘68 to get Nixon elected, promising Saigon a better deal than they were getting with LBJ and Humphrey — so we got Nixon as president and SIX MORE YEARS OF THAT WAR, with massive death and destruction. POWER is what the oligarchs supporting Republicans are all about. World dominance and absolute wealth and power.
I suspect that something similar happened in this election, when Netanyahu abruptly sank a ceasefire agreement with Hamas. I have little doubt that Trump urged him to do so.
I remember learning about this some years ago. In all of the articles about Carter's achievements as President, whenever the hostage crisis is a topic, the GOP's traitorous actions never seem to be mentioned. Why, I don't know. (Working for the GQP now, and not wanting to rock that boat?)
I just comped you a paid subscription FOREVER. We'll have some podcasts this coming year for paid subscribers, and I want you to have everything. Your comments are incredible, and I feel like you're a kindred spirit of everything good.
Thank you so much! Yes, we share the same hopes. I have been blessed to have your insights to guide me during 2024. I'll be needing you in 2025, that's for sure!!
It was always thus. In 1968 Anna Chenault secretly communicated with the North Vietnamese to stall participation in Paris Peace Talks until Nixon won the election. How many GIs died to ensure a political victory?
No disagreement here. Those poor folks were freed 45 minutes after Reagan took the oath.
I will never forget the look of searing pain on Carter's face as Reagan took the oath, as he knew that he had not freed the hostages out on his watch.
Anybody over a certain age will remember how those 52 Americans had become a national obsession. It was all you heard about from November 4, 1979, to January 1981. Yellow ribbons everywhere. The Tony Orlando song all the time. Walter Cronkite reminding us how many days they were stuck there.
When they came home, I went to the ticker tape parade in New York and the rally at City Hall. Some bigshot, in his speech, gave the huge crowd a quote from Gertrude Stein that baffled the thousands in attendance.
Finally, someone with a thick Bronx accent yelled, "Yeah, Gertrude!" sarcastically, and the entire audience burst out laughing.
The bigshot wrapped up his speech real fast and departed the stage.
That night, I heard cheering from my apartment window. I peered out and saw New York Transit buses zooming across 7th Avenue, along 14th Street. I realized they were the buses taking the "Free Americans," as the media were calling them to a special performance of a Broadway show in their honor. People on the street recognized the convoy, and were cheering.
I read later that a few of the hostages, exhausted from the endless receptions, fell asleep in the middle of the show. I wouldn't doubt it.
Nobody remembers them anymore. We should. Three of them were so devastated by the ordeal of captivity and psychological torment, they committed suicide....
The hostages were held more than 100 extra days to give us Saint Reagan. The beginning of the end for our focused democracy … All part of the Oligarch’s Long Con to take over for real {They tried with Tricky Dicky, but he was too obviously a crook — They were sneakier after that — made sure they had the Attorney Generals in their pocket — Bill Barr ESPECIALLY! And now, here we are. They don’t even have to be sneaky any more. They have Congress and the Courts, and they think they have won. I hope they are wrong!}
I have read this before, and, as usual, wait in vain for any mention, not even on Deadline White House. The world has big void where the goodness and honesty of Jimmy Carter stood against the darkness.

And both the hostages and the American people were the victims.
Three of the returned hostages committed suicide since then….
Truly tragic. Can we call those deaths "murders by proxy"?
I agree.
