A well crafted survey of fascism. More people need to be made aware of the underpinnings that support and promulgate fascism.

With regards to point number 8 and America in particular, I would say that there is no one religion specifically that provides the major impetus that melds politics with extremism, but rather the emphasis on "God" as the overarching "Authority" is what is the prime driver of the extreme right;

This drive in its concentrated form within the echelons of the far right then filters leftwards through the right of center spectrum finding sympathies and agreements with nearly all conservatives due to the appeal to God, that is by and largely supported by the fixed/metaphysical epistemology that informs and becomes the only accepted body of knowledge within which right wing proponents abide;

For it is only within such closed minded understandings of how things operate and work that evidentially supported conclusions will not be the foundation of how a society and its individual citizens should conduct themselves, as opposed to left of center thinking which is by and largely comprised of a knowledgeability that is founded in a developing/naturalistic epistemology which leads the way with open minded understandings of how things operate and work due to the use of evidences to support how individuals and by extension society should be conducted for the benefits of all concerned.

With these thoughts in mind I have recently come to the conclusion that the best single descriptor to use for the so-called Christodemocracy movement is the more accurate, comprehensive term-Theopolitical movement.

A bit later than 2003, but other early warnings: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2007/apr/24/usa.comment and

What I only recently fully realized: fascism/ Nazis/ dictatorships are possible because people let it happen and/or buy into it. Sometimes, because they've never experienced democracy, like China or Russia. But look at Iran: people (women in particular) are so fed up that they're risking their lives for change. Here in the U.S., people have been brainwashed with 24-hr TV plus commercials much longer than in Europe. And it shows.
